A garage is not just space where one keeps their car. In fact, that’s rarely the case. It’s very common for garages to double as storage areas and even to be transformed into something completely different. Garage conversions are super interesting and today we’re actually having a closer look at such a project.
It was done by studios Prismatica Architects and Modern Granny Flat and involves the transformation of a large, detached garage into a backyard home. Although it’s quite large for a garage, the space is rather compact when you think of it as a home and a living area. To make the interior appear big, bright and open, the designers made use of white walls and concrete flooring. The ceiling is also white and has exposed wooden trusses.
The interesting part is the way in which the interior of this garage home was configured. The idea was to create a flexible space which could be easily reorganized based on need and the type of activity taking place at any given moment. Although small, this unusual home has it all: an open kitchen, a living room, a bedroom and a bathroom. There’s an entire wall covered in wooden cubbies, some of which conceal a Murphy bed and others that can be removed and used as extra seating. There’s also a timber volume that houses all the storage and plumbing and also hides the bathroom and a set of panels which can slide to separate the living room and bedroom areas. All of these elements combined with a few other ones help to make this a very flexible home with lots of possibilities for reconfiguration.
